After the lush landscape of Ethiopia, I hit the hot dust and deserts of its northerly neighbour, Sudan.
For a week I was held in the capital, Khartoum, waiting and waiting for my bank to process the document I needed to continue my adventure. The baking heat penned me in a cheap hotel, but finally I was able to leave - only to discover the long road north was blisteringly, suffocatingly hot.
Little chance for traditional sight-seeing then - I was desperate to get to the Wadi Halfa ferry and to cross the border to Egypt... Strangely, all this gave me an experience of Sudan that was at least memorable.
